The Student Recruitment Manager is a highly-visible role within the ICR, responsible for the recruitment of our research degree students, including the recruitment of joint students with partner organisations. The post-holder will also oversee the organisation of our annual scientific conference. It requires project management, attention to detail, the planning of complex events, and clear, tactful communication.
Although not essential, understanding of research degree programmes and academic events would be an advantage. For example, this role might be of interest to postdoctoral scientists now wishing to pursue a broader role in higher education administration. By working in a small department, in collaboration with our scientific leaders and university partners, the post-holder will develop an excellent grounding in the inner workings of a university.
A large part of the role involves working with our academic staff to run our recruitment process, which is designed to select only the very highest calibre of students. This process is increasingly complex, as the ICR hosts a number of discrete doctoral training programmes with specific requirements for branding and reporting to funding bodies. The role requires a minimum of an undergraduate degree, proven experience of managing complex deadline-driven projects, and the confidence and ability to inspire trust in both applicants and staff.
Work relating to student recruitment happens throughout the year, but is focused in our annual large recruitment event in January/February. In addition, post holder will be involved in analysing and reporting on equality statistics and reviewing admissions policies and procedures. A key area of activity will also be working with partner organisations with which the ICR runs joint training programmes.
The post-holder is also responsible for overseeing the organisation of the whole-ICR scientific conference, which currently takes place off-site every summer. This event brings together scientists from across our research divisions, allowing the sharing of knowledge that epitomises our approach to inter-disciplinary discovery. For this, the post-holder should have some experience of organising events, have an excellent standard of written and spoken business English, and be demonstrably self-motivated.
This is an interesting role that will evolve over time. There are many opportunities to enhance the way we work, and new projects that will increasingly require the post-holder’s expertise and guidance.
The salary will be in the range £28,343 – £31,263 per annum inclusive, and will be based upon skills and relevant experience.
