The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. Our scientists and clinicians are working every day to make a real impact on cancer patients’ lives. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, and today lead the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) has charitable status and relies on support from partner organisations, charities, donors and the public. We are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

The Institute of Cancer Research seeks a motivated, technical individual to join its Scientific Computing Team to provide support for our High Performance Computing (HPC) service.

The ICR is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

The individual will support our cancer researchers and clinicians who use the ICR’s HPC service. They will provide first line user support and must be able to convey technical concepts to non-specialists. We are looking for somebody who is a proactive problem solver but who can also work in a wider team running a portfolio of services, helping to drive continuous improvement.

The post holder must have demonstrable Linux server management skills including scripting, DevOps, service monitoring, storage and networking concepts, and an interest in applying cutting edge technology. Exposure to HPC environments and technologies (such as parallel file systems and job schedulers) is advantageous but not a requirement and training will be given in specific areas. Experience of the administration of relevant Cloud-based services for data processing and large scale storage would also be beneficial.

The post-holder will report to the HPC Lead but also be expected to report and provide strategic guidance to the Head of Scientific Computing and other managers within the Institute.

This is a post which will interest Linux administrators looking to work on large scale infrastructure in a stimulating environment which makes a difference to people’s lives.

A full list of the requirements of the post can be found in the job description. Informal enquiries can be made to the Head of Scientific Computing, jon.lockley@icr.ac.uk.

We consider all applications on merit and have a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of our staff.
