The Centre for Evolution and Cancer (CEC) within the ICR and headed by Professor Sir Mel Greaves is supported by a strategic award from the Wellcome Trust. The Centre focuses on interrogating clonal evolution in tumours by studying the dynamics of heterogeneous cancer cell populations and their microenvironment. In the Centre, we make use of multi-region genomic profiling, single-cell genetics, computational histopathological analysis and mathematical modelling to reconstruct the past evolutionary history of tumours and predict their future.


We are committed to take on the challenge of cancer’s complexity, evolution and drug resistance through the discovery of innovative new approaches to cancer treatment. To facilitate this ICR is building a state-of-the-art Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery, which is due to open in mid-2020, so we can discover even more innovative cancer drugs that tackle intra-tumour heterogeneity and treatment resistance from the start.   The CEC together with the CRUK Cancer Therapeutics Unit will move into this new building and therefore we want to build capacity in cancer evolution, and particularly quantitative methods to understand cancer biology and drug resistance, in order to combat cancer’s ability to adapt and evolve.


We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated researcher to establish an independent research programme focusing on quantitative cancer biology to contribute to the research of the Centre for Evolution and Cancer.  This new team will work in association with Professor Sir Mel Greaves FRS and Dr Andrea Sottoriva and in collaboration with the other faculty members of the Centre for Evolution and Cancer.


The appointment may be made at either tenure-track equivalent (Career Development Faculty) or at a more senior level (Career Faculty). Appropriate support (including staff, consumables and equipment) for the successful applicant’s laboratory will be provided.
