Head of Shared Research Platforms
The Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer. Today, we are world leaders in discovering new-targeted cancer drugs, identifying new cancer genes and developing new forms of precision radiotherapy. The ICR came top in the league table of university research quality compiled from the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014). Based on our publication record, citations and impact, we rank among the world’s leading cancer research centres. As a college of the University of London, the ICR provides postgraduate higher education of international distinction. We also have charitable status and rely on support from partner organisation, charities, donors and the public.
The ICR is committed to attracting and developing the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. Underpinning this goal is access to state-of-the-art research equipment and instrumentation.
Reporting to the Director of Research Operations, the Head of Shared Research Platforms represents an opportunity to move into a leadership role in an exciting and challenging environment. The post holder will be responsible for the sound business management, including cost recovery, of the ICR’s suite of Shared Research Facilities (SRFs). You will provide leadership and ensure that users of SRFs have access to cutting-edge research equipment to facilitate their world-leading research. You will keep under review the level of usage of equipment and resources, seeking to maximise internal usage while making surplus capacity available externally. You will also drive an effective response to identified funding opportunities.
The successful applicant will be scientifically literate with demonstrable commercial awareness gained for example in a CRO or biotech company, or previous responsibility of cost recovery in a Higher Education Institute (HEI). Whilst scientifically literate the post holder will not be expected to provide scientific leadership to the SRFs, but will facilitate the appropriate interactions through steering groups to ensure that the highest standards are met and delivered.
You must have excellent interpersonal skills including diplomacy, influencing and relationship building and proven resource management, operational and strategic planning ability.
Applicants should be educated to degree level in a scientific discipline and have a research degree (masters or doctorate) in a relevant scientific discipline or substantial equivalent experience. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a successful track record in running a high throughput research facility, and the ability to lead a continuous improvement process across the SRFs.
The Salary is on the Professional Services Grade 1. Progression is determined by annual performance review.
